2018 Dodge Journey
2018 Dodge Journey
The most inexpensive 7-passenger sport utility vehicle? The 2018 Dodge Journey has that title locked up.
Why Buy the Dodge Journey?
Dodge has deduced what most manufacturer’s haven’t: if your family is big enough to need a seven-passenger vehicle, you probably don’t have a lot of money left over for huge car payments. With a price that starts at $22,000 and never climbs above $35,000, even with every box checked, the Dodge Journey is one of the most inexpensive three-row sport utility vehicle on the market. While some might complain about its lack of frills, if you need a good SUV that gets your whole crew from point A to point B, the Journey will fit the bill.
Lots of reviewers unfairly give the Dodge Journey low marks solely for its base 174-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. And, admittedly, it’s not a great engine. But that’s easily solved by upgrading to the 283-horsepower, V6 engine. Once that’s done, the Dodge Journey becomes a strong, steady, and smooth ride at a bargain price.
Finally, the easy-to-use UConnect infotainment system is almost universally praised. Its layout is intuitive, graphics sharp, and navigation intuitive. The only downside is it doesn’t offer smartphone connectivity and the base is a cramped 4.3-inch touch screen, (though it can be upgraded to 8.3-inch).
Which Dodge Journey is Best?
Unless you don’t mind the 4-cylinder engine, we recommend upgrading to the V6 option. It’s available on any trim except the base SE. Though the top of the line is the Journey GT, we recommend the Journey Crossroad.
The Crossroad comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, power-adjustable driver’s seat, satellite radio, and upgraded Uconnect system with 8.4-inch touch screen and voice recognition. For safety reasons, we also recommend picking up the Driver Convenience Group for its rearview camera and rear parking sensors.
Are Dodge Journeys AWD?
Any Journey with optional V6 engine can come equipped with all-wheel drive for a $1,700 upgrade. If you live in a region with harsh, long winters or plenty of gravel or dirt roads, you may want to check that box.
Does the Journey have 3 Rows?
Yes, all Journeys seat seven because, new for 2018, the third row comes standard. We recommend that only children be seated in the third row, but the other two should accommodate adults just fine.
