2018 Jeep Wrangler JK
What is the Jeep Wrangler JK?
What’s new for 2018? Basically, Jeep is giving Wrangler lovers the chance to buy a new model and an older model simultaneously, renaming them to give them a unique identity. The brand-new version of the Wrangler is called the Wrangler JL, but the old model will continue as the Wrangler JK. The name isn’t actually new, and Jeep enthusiasts often use terms like JK to differentiate between different versions of the Wrangler that novices would think are all the same. The Wrangler JK will continue to be sold in both two-door and four-door formats, with the four-door version being 20.6-inches longer than the two-door Wrangler JK.
Why Buy the Wrangler JK?
You should buy a Wrangler JK first and foremost because it’s a really cool vehicle and an outstanding off-roader. Even if you never leave the urban jungle for the wilderness in your Wrangler JK, you’ll still look like a wild adventurer while you’re driving around the city.
You may also want to buy a Wrangler JK because you like the retro-style of the exterior, the no-nonsense attitude of its interior, and because you’re not in love with the new Wrangler as you are with this older model. And of course, the Wrangler JK is likely to be more affordable than the new Wrangler JL.
Which JK is the best for off-road?
Every version of the JK comes with four-wheel drive so they’re all capable off-roaders, even at the entry level of the JK Sport model. However, if you want to get really serious about mixing it off-road with the rough stuff, from the Rubicon upwards the 4:1 Rock-Trac part-time 4WD system becomes standard.
Lower trims come standard with the Command-Trac shift-on-the-fly part-time 4WD system, but they also have many of the other important features that make the JK so capable off-road. Every JK has 44.3 degrees of approach angle, a 25.4 degree break-over, and 40.4 degrees of departure angle. In the Wrangler world, these are the kind of performance numbers that matter most.
How much can the Jeep Wrangler JK Tow?
Despite all versions having the same 3.6-liter V-6 engine that develops 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, there’s a big difference in towing capacity between the two and four-door models. Two-door versions have a pretty modest capacity of just 2,000 pounds, which isn’t much better than a similar-sized crossover with a four-cylinder. However, if you go for the longer four-door version of the Wrangler JK, the maximum towing capacity increases significantly to a much more capable 3,500 pounds when equipped with the maximum tow package.
